Suspect Shot In Altercation With Deputy Arraigned In Hospital
The shoplifting suspect is accused of brandishing a knife at Santa Rosa Plaza mall security guards and at the deputy, according to police.
SANTA ROSA, CA β A Minnesota man who was shot during a confrontation with a Sonoma County sheriff's deputy last Thursday was arraigned in a hospital Monday. Brad Baymon, 42, is charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted carjacking and concealing a dirk or dagger.
Santa Rosa police said Baymon stole a pair of shoes from Macy's in the Santa Rosa Plaza, brandished a knife at store security officers and tried to stab one of them in the face around 5:40 p.m.
Baymon then encountered on-duty sheriff's Deputy David Edney, who was outside the mall, and refused a warning to stop, police said.

Edney shot Baymon with a Taser stun gun twice but it had little or no effect and Baymon ran toward Edney's patrol car that was parked at the curb of West Ninth Street with the driver's door open and the engine running, police said.
Baymon entered the patrol car and pulled the door shut. Edney pulled the door open and ordered Baymon out of the patrol car and tried to pull Baymon out of the car. Baymon refused to get out and he brandished a knife at Edney and shut the car door, police said.

Baymon then tried to put the car in gear and Edney shot at Baymon six times through the closed driver's side window, striking Baymon at least three times in the upper body. Baymon was then taken to a hospital. A knife and the stolen shoes were recovered from the patrol car, police said.
Police said Baymon's last known address was in Minnesota and they do not know how long he has been in Santa Rosa and where he was staying. He is scheduled to enter a plea to the charges against him on Aug. 19.
Edney is a field training officer with the sheriff's office. He was a Sebastopol police officer for five and a half years and has been a sheriff's deputy for four and a half years.
