Ammonia Leak Reported in Roseville Railyard

The Roseville Fire Hazmat Team responded to an anhydrous ammonia leak at the JR Davis Railyard about 2 a.m. Thursday.

A small anhydrous ammonia release was reported about 2 a.m. Thursday at the JR Davis Railyard in Roseville. The leak is not at a dangerous level, according to Roseville Fire, and firefighters are expected to have the leak stopped this morning.

The leak was reported by Union Pacific workers who smelled ammonia. Firefighters responded and determined that the release was caused by a faulty gasket and have the parts available to make the repair.

The leak is reportedly small and will not require evacuations. Although citizens may smell ammonia down wind of the incident, it is not at a dangerous level, according to Roseville Fire. Anhydrous ammonia is a gas form of ammonia and can be detected by the human nose at about 2 parts per million. The dangerous levels are well above the odor level and levels are being constantly monitored by the Roseville Fire Department's hazmat team.

If there are any increaes in the level of ammonia in the air, citizens will be warned, however it is very unlikely this will occur, according to Roseville Fire.

No injuries were reported.
