Funding Delays Construction of New Elementary School

The Roseville City School District plans to open a new kindergarten- through fifth-grade school for the 2013-14 school year.

Construction of a new Roseville elementary school has been delayed because of funding.

The kindergarten- through fifth-grade school will be located in west Roseville on North Hayden Parkway off of Fiddyment Road. It will be the 19th school in the district.

The school, which has not yet been named, is expected to open for the 2013-14 school year, according to Richard Pierucci, superintendent of the Roseville City School District.

Initially, the district planned to begin construction this spring, but that has been delayed. Currently, the district has the construction company selected and plans submitted.

“We’re waiting for the release of construction money from the State Allocation Board,” Pierucci said. “We’re ready to move forward.”

The State Allocation Board allocates funds to school districts in California. Pierucci said they hope to have more information regarding funding status in June.

News of this new elementary school comes at a time shortly after district trustees . However, Pierucci said the two district areas are facing different issues.

“(We are) expanding in the west side of the district. The other situation we have on the east side of the district, we have declining enrollment issues we’re facing,” he said. “We’re already beyond capacity at Junction Elementary to house students.”

The new school will be located within the West Roseville Specific Plan area and currently those students in west Roseville attend . Pierucci said boundaries for the new school have not been determined yet, but they expect to make boundary decisions early next year.

The district estimates that the new school will house about 250-300 students its first year open with a capacity between 550-600 students.

Pierucci estimates that opening this west Roseville elementary school will cost about $200,000, which includes administration, office and custodial staffing, he said.
