Memorial for Slain Galt PD Officer to be Held in Roseville Monday

Thousands of law enforcement officials and citizens are expected to come together next week to mourn a Galt Police Officer killed in the line of duty.

Kevin Tonn, 35, was shot and killed while investigating a burglarly call in Galt on Tuesday.

The suspect who allegedly shot Tonn, who was not the same suspect sought in the burglary call, then turned a gun on himself, officials say.

The officer got his first taste of law enforcement as a member of the Roseville Police Explorers in 1991, according to the Galt Police Department .

The Roseville Press-Tribune reported that Tonn attended Roseville High School.

"Even then he fit the mold of what a police officer should be," Rocklin Police Lt. Jamie Knox, who was in the Explorers program with Tonn, told the Press-Tribune . "He had such intensity about the explorers I was kind of surprised he didn’t go into law enforcement sooner than he did.”

After high school, Tonn served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer, then worked as a volunteer firefighter in New York. He moved to Sacramento, owned and operated a parcel-shipping business, then attended the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department academy and was hired by the Galt Police Department. He worked for the Galt Police Department for three and a half years, becoming a K-9 officer.

A memorial service for Tonn will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Adventure Christian Church, 6401 Stanford Ranch Road.

City officials warn that traffic will be impacted on Galleria Boulevard and Roseville Parkway before and after the service.
