The July 25th Event Targets Hard-hit Hispanic/Latino Community

SACRAMENTO – This year, the annual celebration of Mariachi music in Sacramento is bringing something new to the festival participants and the community! A shot! But not the traditional shot you would expect. In a move to advance COVID-19 vaccinations among Sacramento Latinos, key elected officials and community groups have teamed up to organize a pop-up vaccination clinic on Sunday, July 25th, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the Mariachi Festival held at Southside Park Community Garden in downtown Sacramento.
According to State data, vaccination rates among Black and Latino Californians still lag behind other groups with Latinos accounting for about 40% of the state population, but represent 28.3% of those who have received their first dose of the vaccine.
Organizers hope to attract a couple thousand visitors and vaccinate as many as 200 event goers. La Familia Counseling Center, Health Impact and the Sacramento Native American Health Clinic will be providing the vaccinations and making available COVID tests at no cost. The first 100 people who register for the vaccination will receive a $25 gift card and free entrance to the event.

This year’s theme at the mariachi festival is “Vacunate Ya! Hazlo por Tu Familia” or “Vaccinate Now! Do it for Your Family.” Even participants will also enjoy prize drawings, food, music and culture.
“There’s no question that the Latino community has borne the brunt of the Covid Pandemic,” said Jim Gonzalez, President of the Latino Economic Council of Sacramento. “With the Delta Variant now on the rise, it is more important than ever for us to find ways to keep our communities safe.”

The pop-up clinic comes in response to the ongoing need to provide access to COVID-19 vaccinations in communities of color, in particular the Hispanic/Latino community across our region. As a high number of Latinos/as remain unvaccinated, it is extremely important to make vaccinations easily accessible, especially as the Delta variant has become the most dominant variant. The Sacramento Bee recently reported that “in the 15 ZIP codes with the highest proportion of Latino residents rates, the rate of reported COVID-19 infections was about 29 per 10,000 residents, compared to 21 per 10,000 residents in the 15 ZIP codes with the lowest proportion of Latino residents.”
The vaccination clinic is being organized by the Latino Economic Council of Sacramento and La Familia Counseling Center, Inc., in collaboration with Sacramento City Councilmembers Eric Guerra and Katie Valenzuela; Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna; Ambassador Liliana Ferrer, Consul General of Mexico in Sacramento; Health Impact and the Sacramento Native American Health Clinic. The event producer is Miguel Castillo of Life Entertainment/Fiesta En La Calle.
