1. Sacramento police investigate El Camino Avenue shooting that wounded a man (sacbee.com) — A man was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot Wednesday evening on El Camino Avenue in North Sacramento, in the Ben Ali neighborhood near Capital City Freeway. Sacramento police say the incident also involved a vehicle crash and briefly closed the road, and investigators are still working to determine what led up to the shooting.
   

2. Sacramento County Grand Jury is asking for volunteers: here's what you need to know (capradio.org) — Sacramento County is recruiting residents now to serve on its independent Grand Jury for the 2026–27 term, a watchdog that reviews complaints and oversees county and city agencies, schools, and special districts. Applicants must meet residency and eligibility requirements, pass vetting, and commit to a year of confidential, committee-based investigations aimed at improving local government and better reflecting the county’s diversity.
   

3. Construction starts on new North Sacramento library expected to open in 2027 (abc10.com) — A long-awaited new North Sacramento-Hagginwood Library is finally under construction on Del Paso Boulevard, with opening planned for early 2027. The city is transforming the former Sacramento News & Review building into a space nearly five times larger than the current branch, adding dedicated areas for kids, teens, and adults plus flexible community rooms shaped by neighborhood feedback.
   

4. Man arrested in sex assault of 13-year-old girl at Sacramento County sleepover (sacbee.com) — A 25-year-old man has been arrested and jailed on $500,000 bail after deputies say he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl during a sleepover at a Sacramento County home. Detectives from the Sheriff’s Child Abuse Bureau investigated for months before an arrest warrant was issued, and the suspect has now appeared in Sacramento Superior Court, with further proceedings set for early January.
   

5. Sacramento calls for winter donations as cold-weather respite center extends (kcra.com) — Sacramento County has extended its cold-weather respite center at the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center through at least Jan. 5 and is urgently asking residents to donate warm clothing, blankets, and hygiene items. The city of Sacramento is also activating additional weather respite sites, and anyone seeking shelter is urged to call 211 first to confirm space.
