Data Report: How the City responded to homelessness Dec. 22-28 (sacramentocityexpress.com) — Sacramento city officials just released detailed data on how they handled homelessness calls from December 22–28, including 440 calls to 311 that generated 1,852 cases and 39,020 pounds of trash removed. The report also shows shelter capacity was nearly maxed out, with only one space at the Outreach and Engagement Center and an average of eight openings at other city-funded shelters. Residents can track weekly progress through the city’s online IMT dashboard.

Skalet Family Jewelers, currently based in Sacramento, to close after 128 years (abc10.com) — A beloved Old Sacramento mainstay, Skalet Family Jewelers is closing as owner Howard Skalet retires after more than four decades behind the counter and 128 years of family craftsmanship. The fourth-generation jeweler reflects on serving tens of thousands of Sacramento families through engagements, weddings, and memorial pieces, and hints that “big news” is coming for the shop’s historic Old Sacramento space.
   

4. Fortune School Outpaces CA by Closing the Achievement Gap for Black Students (sb-american.com) — Sacramento families are seeing Fortune Schools report faster academic gains for Black students than California’s overall averages, with most of the network’s campuses based in the city. The charter system, founded in Sacramento, pairs longer school days, small-group instruction, and early college partnerships so a significant share of students graduate with associate degrees and access to scholarships like those at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
   

5. California delays cancelation of 17,000 CDLs amid lawsuit and federal warning (abc10.com) — From Sacramento, state officials have delayed canceling about 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses for non-domiciled drivers, moving the deadline from January 5 to March 6 amid a lawsuit and federal pressure. The change, driven partly by advocacy groups representing Sikh and other immigrant truckers, could affect freight movement and immigrant workers across California while the DMV and U.S. transportation officials argue over safety and funding.

    Also if you find an animal bring it to any vet for them to check for a chip, and finally if you see a stray animal in the streets call 311 to handle… (Nextdoor Arcade Village)
