NorCal law enforcement crack down on illegal fireworks amid New Year's Eve, surprise fines (fox40.com) — If you’re planning New Year’s Eve in Sacramento, expect a tougher crackdown on illegal fireworks, with police and fire crews teaming up overnight. Sacramento Police say drones and mailed citations will help them spot violators, and they’re urging residents to report illegal use or sales directly to the Sacramento Fire Department.
   

2. 1 person killed in South Sacramento crash, CHP says (abc10.com) — A deadly overnight crash at Franklin Boulevard and 47th Avenue in South Sacramento left one driver dead and three people hospitalized with major injuries early Saturday. CHP says a gray Nissan allegedly ran a red light, was struck by another car, and then crashed into a parking lot fence, with alcohol believed to be a factor as the investigation continues.

Where to dispose your Christmas tree in Sacramento area (fox40.com) — Sacramento residents have several free, convenient options to recycle their Christmas trees, from curbside pickup by “the Claw” to multiple local drop-off sites in the city and county. You can leave up to five trees for pickup, use organic waste containers, or visit locations like SMUD’s yard and Kiefer Landfill on early January dates, with rules on decorations and placement.

A's fans enjoy free ice skating sessions in Sacramento (kcra.com) — Free Oakland A’s–sponsored ice skating sessions are hitting the downtown Sacramento ice rink, giving local fans three no-cost chances to get on the ice this winter. Families are enjoying the team mascot, Stomper, and a festive atmosphere as the rink stays open through Jan. 19, with additional free skate days on January 3 and 10.
   

5. California withdraws lawsuit challenging Trump's $4 billion high-speed rail funding cut (spokesman.com) — California’s decision to drop its lawsuit over $4 billion in revoked federal high‑speed rail funding was announced from Sacramento, with officials telling the Sacramento Bee they no longer see Washington as a reliable partner. State rail leaders say they’ll lean on cap‑and‑trade revenue and private investors instead, insisting construction will continue despite the loss of federal dollars.
