1. 4 takeaways from The Bee's series on Sacramento's $120M homeless shelter spend (sacbee.com) — Sacramento city and county have spent about $120 million since 2020 on eight homeless shelters with roughly 950 beds, yet only about 20% of guests move into permanent housing. With a new $87 million, 275-bed shelter opening soon, experts are urging leaders to consider rental assistance as a potentially cheaper, more effective alternative for local residents.

2. Sacramento's Dine Downtown kicks off 2026 with culinary experience (fox40.com) — Sacramento’s popular Dine Downtown returns January 9–18, 2026, offering three-course meals at top local restaurants for $45 while supporting area nonprofits. With dozens of participating spots from Ella to Frank Fat’s, the event aims to boost downtown businesses and has already generated millions in local sales over two decades.

3. Need a holiday companion? Front Street Shelter asks community to foster dogs for two weeks (kcra.com) — Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter is urgently looking for local families to foster more than 70 medium and large dogs for about two weeks over the holidays, helping ease year-end crowding. The shelter supplies food, crates, and treats, and also offers short-term options like Doggy Day Out, Jog a Dog, and Pups in PJs for residents who can’t commit to longer fostering.

4. Department of Child, Family and Adult Services Awarded for Committment to Community (carmichaeltimes.com) — Sacramento County’s Department of Child, Family, and Adult Services has earned an international Social Sector Hero of the Year Award for its measurable impact and transparency. The honor highlights how the Sacramento-region agency uses data and storytelling to show real improvements for local children, families, and older adults, putting the county’s social services work on a global stage.

5. Metro Fire responds to apartment fire in Orangevale (fox40.com) — Sacramento Metropolitan Fire crews quickly knocked down an Orangevale apartment fire on Madison Avenue Saturday afternoon, limiting damage to one first-floor unit and injuring one woman, who was hospitalized with a minor burn. Fire officials are reminding Sacramento-area residents to test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly as investigators work to determine the cause.
