10% Of Patients In Local Hospitals For COVID Need ICUs, But New Cases Down Over Past Week

San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency reported 1,446 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, while the number of deaths rose by seven.

In the three days since the county last released numbers, 3,728 virus cases were confirmed by public health officials.

The numbers seem to be tailing off, however. The county received reports of 9,495 cases in the week that ended Wednesday, compared to 11,362 infections identified the previous week, ending July 27 – a drop of almost 17%.

With the additional cases, the county’s pandemic totals moved up to 891,394. The death toll stands at 5,424.

The county provided a breakdown of the 15 COVID deaths reported from July 11 through Sunday:

The number of people hospitalized locally for COVID-19, meanwhile, dropped to 420, according to the latest state data. But more than 10% of those patients – 47 – required intensive care.
