The unidentified assailant was believed to have fled in a white sedan, police said.
SAN DIEGO, CA — A predawn dispute between four men in San Ysidro escalated Monday into a shooting that left one of them dead and two others wounded.
The gunfire erupted about 4 a.m. in the 100 block of East Calle Primera, just west of Interstate 5 and less than a mile north of the U.S.- Mexico border, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Patrol officers found two of the victims near a motel and the third a short distance away, close to a gas station alongside Interstate 5, SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell told reporters. Paramedics took the three to trauma centers, where one of them, an unidentified man believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead.

The circumstances that led to the shooting were murky, according to police.
"It is still very early in the investigation, and detectives are still at the scene collecting evidence," the lieutenant said in the late afternoon. "Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the suspect and victims all (knew) each other from living in the area. Detectives believe there was some sort of argument or confrontation that led up to the shooting, although details are not yet clear."
