SAN DIEGO, CA — A 5-year-old girl on a scooter was seriously injured after being struck by a suspected drunk driver over the weekend in San Diego, authorities said.

A 21-year-old woman driving a BMW sedan drove onto a closed park pathway around 4:40 p.m. Saturday at 2500 Laning Road in the Midway neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department. She struck a steel bench then crashed into the child before crashing into a tree.

The girl was taken to a hospital. Police said she suffered "life-threatening head injuries and may not survive."

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash. The woman, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested at the scene.

The department's Traffic Division was handling the investigation.
