Armed Man Arrested In Police Standoff In La Mesa

LA MESA, CA — A 43-year-old man was arrested Monday after a lengthy standoff with police in La Mesa, prompted by alleged acts of domestic violence over the weekend, authorities said.

Officers responded at 9:45 p.m. Sunday to reports of an argument between an armed man and his girlfriend at a residence in the 6900 block of Hoffman Avenue, according to the La Mesa Police Department.

A teen, who reportedly made the call, and another child were inside the home, but were picked up safely by their mother before the standoff occurred, police said.

Responding officers asked the suspect to exit the home and to speak to his girlfriend, who was believed to be a hostage, but he declined. The suspect also allegedly made threatening statements and exited the home wielding a shotgun, but did not discharge the weapon, police reported.

The department then requested assistance, including a SDPD SWAT team, hostage negotiators and a crisis team. The man surrendered to authorities around 6:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

Surrounding streets near the area were reopened to traffic shortly before 7:30 a.m. No injuries were reported, and the suspect's name was not released.
