Here are the top stories in San Diego today:
- On Monday, a new baby giraffe was born at The San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park on what would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday. The late Betty White was a longtime animal advocate. "We could not think of a more fitting way to remember (White's) dedication to conservation than watching this newborn giraffe take their first steps," the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance posted on Twitter with a photo of the "brand new wobbly wonder." - After hearing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak decades ago, Theophilus Logan always wanted to emulate Dr. King. He did so by helping minority families to own homes in San Diego. At a time when persons of color could not easily secure mortgages at banks, Logan helped his clients secure home loans through government programs. Logan guided them through the ins and outs of the process so that they could purchase their first homes in neighborhoods such as Logan Heights, building generational wealth. It is for this reason Theophilus Logan was given the YMCA’s prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award on Monday. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (10News)
- UCSD students have been vocal about BLM and police accountability on campus. Several students at various UC schools have filed lawsuits which allege that there were “systematically-reinforced issues of racism, sexism, and homophobia within the UC-PD force.” Has the situation improved at UC schools? The UCSD Guardian is monitoring the situation. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (The UCSD Guardian Online)
