CHP Conducts Labor Day Weekend Crackdown Across San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — Thirty-eight people died in crashes throughout California last year over Labor Day weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol.

To help keep roads safe this holiday weekend in San Diego County and across the state, the CHP will launch an enforcement effort Friday to catch drunk and drug-impaired drivers. The agency's maximum enforcement period, also known as an MEP, will begin at 6:01 p.m. Friday and continue through 11:59 p.m. Monday.

All available officers will be on patrol for targeted crackdowns.

"Everyone's safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices," CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a statement. "Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them. Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives — yours and others."

During the 2023 Labor Day weekend MEP, CHP officers statewide arrested 1,064 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The CHP reminded motorists to designate a sober driver or use public transit or a rideshare service.
