SAN DIEGO, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued an 11-year-old child from a capsized sailboat in the San Diego Bay, officials announced.

The rescue happened Wednesday afternoon when an auxiliarist aboard a 26-foot Aids-to-Navigation Boat heard a call for help. The crew pulled alongside the capsized sailing vessel, deployed a life ring and brought the child on board, according to the Coast Guard.

The crew then towed the sailboat to a nearby pier on Shelter Island, where they emptied out water from the vessel. The child's father, who was aboard another sailboat nearby, met the rescue boat at the pier, officials said.
