SAN DIEGO, CA — Three San Diego County parks have temporarily closed as summer temperatures rise in the region.

Parks officials announced that El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Mt. Gower Preserve in Ramona are closed for the month of August.

The county shuts the parks down every August to protect residents during what is often the hottest time of the year, officials said. After Memorial Day in May, the county also closed Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park, located in or near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, for the summer.

In addition to protecting the public from extreme temperatures, the closures give staff the opportunity to conduct maintenance such as trail restoration, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.
