Firefighters At Mission Bay Resort Free Person Trapped In Camper Crash

First responders, including lifeguards and police, arrived to assist the driver trapped beneath a flipped camper on the bayside beach walk.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Firefighters, Police, and Lifeguards worked to rescue a man trapped beneath his camper-truck near the Mission Bay Resort Wednesday.

The San Diego Fire and Rescue Department firefighters and medics arrived at the resort at 1775 East Mission Bay Drive shortly after 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Onscene Media, the camper truck had "illegally driven down a public sidewalk at the water's edge. " The driver then crashed into the bayside bikeway in front of the resort. One person became trapped underneath.

Officials said some 24 personnel were assigned to the rescue, including two engines, two medics, and one truck for the incident.

“It was very tough access to get down to where the vehicle was located,” San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Jeff Phillips said at the scene. “The victim was pinned," and a passerby assisted until emergency responders arrived.

Emergency responders used shovels to dig him out from underneath he vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries, according to The Times of San Diego reports.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and no other information was immediately available.
