Flood Watch, Wind Advisories Issued For Parts Of San Diego County

A second storm is expected to bring heavier rain, strong winds and mountain snow to the region, according to the National Weather Service.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Another round of rain and gusty winds are on the way to San Diego County.

After a late-winter storm brought widespread showers, a second storm is expected to bring heavier rain, strong winds and mountain snow to the region, according to the National Weather Service.

"A round of widespread precipitation is expected late tonight into early Thursday morning, with additional scattered, locally heavy rain continuing through Thursday afternoon," NWS San Diego forecasters wrote Wednesday. "Widespread gusty winds expected through Thursday from the coast to the deserts. Additional rounds of light rain and snow will continue Friday, with gusty winds for the mountains and deserts."

A flood watch will be in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 6 p.m. Thursday for the county's coastal area, inland valleys and mountains, according to the NWS. Forecasts indicate rainfall rates of a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch per hour, but up to one inch hour in the mountains below the snow level and where thunderstorms develop.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," forecasters said. "Debris flow are possible near recent burn scars. Areas of flooding possible in the mountains below the snow level."

A wind advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday for the coastal areas and valleys, where west winds from 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts from 30 to 40 mph. A wind advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 11 p.m. Thursday for the deserts, where west winds from 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts from 45 to 55 mph.

"Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects," forecasters warned. "Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result."

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday for the mountains. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches is expected above 5,000 feet according to the NWS. Wind gusts could reach between 50 to 65 mph.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the NWS said. "The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches."

Dry conditions are expected over the weekend, according to the NWS. There is a chance of more wet weather next week.
