Police Chase Standoff Triggers Hours-Long I-5 Closure Near San Diego: Reports

The pursuit started in Imperial Beach, according to a report. There was no immediate word on any injuries in the pursuit.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A California Highway Patrol pursuit ended in a stand-off on the Golden State (5) Freeway on Monday, triggering an hours-long closure in San Diego County, according to officials and reports.

California Highway Patrol San Diego said the highway had reopened northbound and southbound as of about 2:30 p.m. Monday, more than two hours after the initial closure.

Caltrans cameras showed heavy traffic through the area.

The I-5 was closed at about noon due to the pursuit, Fox 5/KUSI reported. Southbound lanes were reopened shortly after 1 p.m., the report said.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department said the pursuit began in Imperial Beach at about 10:30 a.m. after deputies witnessed "reckless driving," NBC 7 San Diego reported. CHP officers took over the chase near Sea World Drive about 11:20 a.m., the report said.

CBS 8 reported the pursuit ended on I-5 at State Route 56, with photos showing authorities and the suspect vehicle stopped in the middle of the highway.

There was no immediate word on arrests.
