SAN DIEGO, CA — Authorities have publicly identified a 35-year-old man who was fatally struck by predawn traffic last weekend after venturing onto Interstate 5 on foot in Chula Vista.

A vehicle hit Cesar Pineda of San Diego on the northbound side of the freeway near Palomar Street early Saturday morning, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Investigators believe a second car may have struck Pineda prior to the arrival of emergency-services personnel, who arrived to find his lifeless body about 3:15 a.m., the agency reported.
