SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — We've rounded up the stories you may have missed over the holiday weekend to prepare you for the week ahead.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should know a heat wave is expected in much of Southern California this week with temperatures inching upward each day, according to the National Weather Service.

"Temperatures will trend upwards over the next few days, with potentially dangerous heat expected Wednesday through Friday, and as early as Tuesday for the western San Fernando Valley," NWS Los Angeles forecasters wrote Monday. "The most dangerous heat will occur Thursday across valley and foothill locations. Temperatures will start to lower next weekend."

In other news, a search continued for a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton who went missing last week after leaving a bar in San Diego County, authorities said.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy and two other people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash where the deputy slammed into an apartment building in South Los Angeles.

Six firefighters suffered minor injuries in a 650-acre brush fire in Riverside County, authorities said.

Some residents in one Los Angeles County community remained under an evacuation warning as Southern California Edison shut off electricity in the area. The shutoff comes amid worsening landslides that have accelerated across 680 acres following heavy rains in spring 2023, causing damage to homes, roads and utilities.

Plus, hotel workers at the Westin Long Beach unanimously ratified a new contract that will increase their pay by 60% over the next three and a half years, according to Unite Here Local 11, which represents more than 32,000 hospitality workers in Southern California and Arizona. The announcement about the Long Beach workers came as other hotel workers represented by Unite Here were staging walkouts in eight cities across the U.S., including San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose.
