Local writers and poets on Saturday announced the upcoming debut of “The Mission,” a monthly publication that will showcase comics, cartoons, poetry, short fiction, photography and visual arts, featuring content from local and national artists.

Igor Goldkind, an author and a San Diego resident who is one of the founders of Comic-Con, said the “The Mission” aims to help artists who may not have a lot of publicity or funding to market their works.

“What we want to do with the Mission is to give people a platform,” said Goldkind.

Contributors will be paid, although Goldkind said it won’t be a lot as “The Mission” will operate as a nonprofit. The first issue is expected to come out by the end of August. It will be 96 pages and will be sold for under $8 in comic shops around the country.

Curran Jeffery, a San Diego poet, said this is a good place to launch the periodical.

“San Diego, both in the city and in the county, has a large poetry community,” he said.

One of the biggest local contributors to poetry were the popular books of Dr. Seuss.

“He taught us about poetry without us knowing about it through his rhymes,” said Jeffery.

Goldkind said “The Mission” will help remind people of their humanity, especially in these troubling times.

The announcement of “The Mission” featured poetry readings from several authors, including Miles Krogfus, of San Diego.

“Poetry is magic,” said Krogfus.
