SAN DIEGO, CA — A "rotten egg" smell prompted an odor advisory Wednesday for communities in south San Diego County.
The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District issued an odor advisory due to elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide in the South Bay.
Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas with a rotten egg smell that can cause odor-related symptoms such as headaches and nausea. Elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide were detected by monitoring equipment at Berry Elementary School in San Diego.

The odor advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. for South County communities due to weather and wind patterns that may cause hydrogen sulfide levels to fluctuate.
People who live in the impacted communities are advised to limit time outdoors, close windows and doors, and use air conditioning or indoor air purifiers if possible.
