Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- Is there a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel? Recent modeling at Scripps Health shows that the virus should wind down by early March. "Computer modeling has become a standard and critical tool that we use on an ongoing basis to operate our hospitals and clinics," said Nathaniel Brown, Scripps director of health data sciences. While the pandemic is not ending, COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as boosters, still make a difference in reducing the severity of cases. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - The 2012 ballot measure Proposition B was struck down in 2018 by the California Supreme Court. On Monday, the San Diego City Council voted to offer guaranteed retirement income to employees who were unlawfully excluded from the pension system. Councilmember Vivian Morena said that Prop B was a disaster and that the supposed savings Prop B was supposed to return never materialized. Councilmember Chris Cate, who supported the proposition, responded: "We need to move on, we need to move forward and (make) the best decision for residents, taxpayers and our employees." - We know that impaired driving causes thousands of deaths on our roads. Now a study that analyzes data about how cannabis affects drivers has revealed that cannabis may negatively influence some users. The Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) at UCSD School of Medicine conducted a two-year study with 191 regular cannabis users to determine how well the users did on driving simulation tests over a period of hours. The findings are published in the Jan. 26 online issue of JAMA Psychiatry. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (San Diego Metropolitan)
- With hundreds of thousands of children trafficked in all 50 states, trafficking generates $810 million each year. It is the second largest underground black-market industry in America. The typical victim is just 15 years old. "Saved In America" helps parents and law enforcement locate missing and runaway children, those most vulnerable to exploitation. Their mission is to locate your child. If you or someone you know is a victim of sex trafficking, please contact the Human Trafficking Hotline 888-373-3788 or the Saved In America TIP Hotline 760-348-8808. A Glock 17 handgun equipped with a 50 round 9 mm drum magazine was found during the foot pursuit. Vigilant officers saw a driver not stop at a stop sign. When they tried stopping the car, the driver speeds off. Driving at high speed he soon crashed and ran. With the help of the police helicopter, police dog, and several officers they were able to locate him and arrest him." (Facebook)
- San Diego Humane Society: "A daring cat named Ash is now safe in the care of San Diego Humane Society after a high stakes adventure! Our Humane Officers received a call over the weekend to help a black cat trapped in a high tree — but when they arrived, they found concerned citizen Pedro Rodriguez up in the tree, already placing the kitty in his backpack before climbing back down to safety.
