San Diego BASE-Jumping Accident Leaves 1 Dead: Reports
A man with a helmet and parachute died Tuesday after he appeared to have jumped from a balcony off a University City apartment building.
SAN DIEGO, CA — A man died Tuesday night in what appeared to be a BASE-jumping accident in University City, according to reports.
A 911 caller told police around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday they heard a "loud pop" near the Westfield UTC shopping mall and saw a man bleeding on the ground below, the San Diego Tribune reported. The man was wearing a helmet and had a parachute.
Emergency responders tried to revive the man. He died at the scene.

Sgt. Kevin Gibson told the newspaper it appeared his parachute failed to open as he attempted to BASE jump.
Police told KNSD-TV that security guards at the 20-plus-story Palisade UTC building recently reported BASE jumping incidents.
