San Diego Central Jail Inmate Suspected In Cellmate's Death Arrested

A 36-year-old inmate was arrested in connection with the death of a 24-year-old cellmate, authorities said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 36-year-old inmate was arrested in connection with the death of a 24-year-old cellmate, authorities said Tuesday.

Homicide investigators were notified around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 about an inmate at the San Diego Central Jail pronounced dead, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's officials said investigators arrested Alvin McDonald Ruis based on probable cause in connection with the death of Andrew Yates.

"We extend our sympathies to the Yates family and those affected by this death. A sheriff's liaison officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one," sheriff's officials said in a statement.

Ruis was initially arrested at his residence in Chula Vista by the Chula Vista Police Department on Dec. 27 on suspicion of domestic violence, willful cruelty to a child, stalking, burglary, violation of a court order, committing a felony while out on bail and violation of a domestic violence temporary restraining order.

Sheriff's homicide investigators conducted a thorough investigation as required by protocol, and the case has been sent to the District Attorney's Office for filing of charges.

The county medical examiner's office will determine the cause of Yates' death.
