SAN DIEGO, CA — Fernando Tatis Jr., the star shortstop for the San Diego Padres, could miss up to three months of the season after the team said he broke his left wrist and will likely need surgery.

Tatis, 23, suffered the injury in the offseason, general manager A.J. Preller said Monday. The injury may have happened early in the offseason and Tatis may have aggravated it when he began swinging a few weeks ago, MLB.com reported.

The injury is just the latest blow for the team and Tatis, arguably MLB's biggest star. Tatis, who signed a 14-year, $340 million contract extension last year with the Padres, also suffered a series of injuries to his left shoulder last year.

Tatis still led the NL with 42 home runs in 2021 and finished third in voting for the NL MVP. He batted .282 with 97 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 130 games.

In his three-year career, Tatis slashed .292/.369/.596.

The injury is costly for the Padres, a team that was looking for a fresh start following a late-season collapse that left it with yet another losing record.

The regular season is set to begin April 7.
