Series Of Earthquakes Rattle Imperial County East Of San Diego

The series of small quakes struck in the Brawley area​ of Imperial County.

IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA — More than a dozen small earthquakes have rattled Imperial County in the past day.

The series of quakes struck late Monday night and continued into early Tuesday morning in the Brawley area of Imperial County, east of San Diego.

The largest earthquake was a 3.9-magnitude quake, which struck at 11:59 p.m. Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake had a depth of about 10 miles.

By 9:23 a.m. Tuesday, Southern California Seismic Network recorded 14 aftershocks, with the smallest being a 1.3-magnitude quake.

"More aftershocks may be expected in the next few days, the largest expected is approximately 1 magnitude unit smaller than the mainshock," Southern California Seismic Network wrote. "There is a small chance — about 5% — that a larger quake could occur, with the likelihood decreasing over time."

Two possible foreshocks were recorded during the three days prior to the quake, including a 2.7-magnitude temblor that struck at 11:27 p.m. Monday, according to Southern California Seismic Network.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.
