Suspected DUI Driver Injured In Crash Into Palm Tree In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 49-year-old man suspected of driving while intoxicated sustained multiple injuries Thursday when his crossover SUV crashed into a palm tree in Mission Bay Park.

The man, whose name was not released, was driving a silver 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound in the 400 block of Seaworld Drive when he made an unsafe movement to the left and drove onto the center island shortly after 4:10 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims.

The tree fell into the eastbound lanes and struck a 2018 white Jeep that was heading eastbound in the 400 block Seaworld Drive. The 20-year-old man driving the Jeep did not sustain any injuries, Heims said.

The driver of the Hyundai sustained a fractured skull, left knee, and right foot along with lacerations to both his knees and chin, Heims said.

The man was cited for DUI and was later released at a hospital, Heims said.

San Diego Police Department Traffic Division detectives were investigating the crash.
