1 Killed In 4-Vehicle Chain Reaction Crash On Bay Bridge

The pileup occurred in the westbound lanes near Yerba Buena Island.

BAY AREA, CA — A four-vehicle chain reaction collision on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge late Friday left one driver dead, the California Highway Patrol said.

The pileup occurred about 11:17 p.m. in the westbound lanes near Yerba Buena Island.

The driver of a Genesis sedan, traveling at high speed, was unaware of slower traffic ahead and was unable to slow, the CHP said Saturday.

The Genesis collided with the rear of a silver Toyota Corolla, the highway patrol said. The Corolla was pushed into another silver Toyota, which in turn was pushed into a gray Toyota.

The crew of a nearby ambulance extricated the driver of the Corolla. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. At least one other person involved in the crash suffered unknown injuries, the CHP said.

The driver of the Genesis remained at the scene and cooperated with an investigation, the CHP said. Driving under the influence was not suspected to be a factor.

The collision blocked four of the five lanes of the bridge for about an hour and 40 minutes, said Officer Mark Andrews, a spokesman for the Golden Gate division of the highway patrol.
