69-Year-Old Man Caught With 17 Stolen Credit Cards Found Guilty

A 69-year-old man was convicted of fraudulently using stolen credit cards to buy electronics from a Target store in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 69-year-old man was convicted of fraudulently using stolen credit cards to buy electronics from a Target store in San Francisco at the start of 2022, prosecutors said.

Andre Sherman was found guilty by a jury of petty fraudulent use of an access card, a misdemeanor under California law. The conviction stems from Jan. 1, 2022, when Sherman used multiple stolen credit and debit cards to buy a laptop, smartphone, and speaker system at the Target store on Mission Street, according to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.

Target employees contacted police after noticing suspicious purchases by Sherman, who was later found in possession of 17 cards -- including credit cards, debit cards and driver's licenses belonging to at least seven different people.

When approached by officers, Sherman allegedly gave a false name matching one of the stolen IDs.

San Francisco police recovered the stolen merchandise and returned it to the store. Victims' accounts were refunded, and personal documents, including driver's licenses, were returned to their rightful owners, according to the District Attorney's Office.

"Credit card fraud is a crime that devastates everyday people," District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement Tuesday. "My office takes these cases seriously and will not hesitate to take action to hold credit card fraudsters accountable. I am grateful the victims in this case were able to get their documents back and have their accounts refunded and are not held liable for Mr. Sherman's crimes."

A sentencing date for Sherman was not immediately given.
