Asian Art Museum Will Hold Annual Bell Ringing Ceremony For The New Year

Over 100 people will get the chance to strike the 2,100-pound, 16th-century Japanese temple bell at 1 p.m. Sunday.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Over 108 people will have the opportunity to ring a bell at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco Sunday afternoon to welcome the New Year.

The 2,100-pound, 16th-century Japanese temple bell will be struck 108 at 1 p.m. by people eager to end this year and start the next in a unique way.

The ringing will be led by Reverend Gengo Akiba in a ceremony organizers said would be inspiring and includes a purification ritual and chanting of the Buddhist Heart Sutra.

People are invited to arrive at the Asian Art Museum and also stay to look at the exhibits on display.

A tour of the bell for the Blind and Visually Impaired community will also be offered at noon. Those interested should visit asianart.org.
