This Bay Area City Ranks #1 In 'Healthiest Cities' Report
In WalletHub's annual "Healthiest Cities" report, one Bay Area city came in first place, while three East Bay cities made the top-30 list.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco is the healthiest city in the United States, according to WalletHub's annual "Healthiest Cities" report. Honolulu, Hawaii ranked second and Seattle, Washington ranked third.
Three other Bay Area cities made the top-30 list, including Fremont (#21), San Jose (#22) and Oakland (#24).
For the study, WalletHub, a personal finance platform, analyzed 182 cities, including the 150 most populated U.S. cities and two or more of the most populated cities in each state, based on health care, food options, fitness and green space availability.

San Francisco's total score based on those dimensions was 68.05, ranking 51 (out of 182) in health care, 1 in food, 35 in fitness and 1 in green space. For perspective, Brownsville, Texas — the city that ranked the lowest, at #182 — had a total score of 24.07, ranking 180 (out of 182) in health care, 182 in food, 182 in fitness and 169 in green space.
In terms of what helped San Francisco nab its high marks, WalletHub noted that the city "spends more per capita on parks and recreation than all major cities except one" and is one of the most walk- and bike-friendly cities of those included in the study. San Francisco's healthy restaurant options also factored into its first-place ranking, according to the report.
