SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco’s got a new eatery heading its way – one known for its mochi donuts and long lines of customers.

In an Instagram post on Friday, the popular South Bay donut shop MoDo Hawaii announced their plans to open a store in San Francisco’s Parkside neighborhood. The celebration-themed short video clip features balloons, confetti, “MoDo,” “Open soon!” signage, and a mochi donut topped with a lit sparkler.

They’ve got an official address – 1353 Taraval St. – but no official open date.

“We don’t know when we can open – we’re waiting on the city,” they shared with Patch.

During MoDo Hawaii’s early days in the Bay Area, they had a pop-up shop in San Jose’s Mitsuwa Marketplace. After a couple of years there, they settled into their current space in Santa Clara, opening their doors to the public on December 8, 2020. Next up is their second permanent spot on Taraval Street, in proximity to McCoppin Square, El Café, Golden Boy Pizza and other local shops.

On their Instagram page, is a sense of the business’s history, as well as the variety of mochi donut flavors on the menu. The shop’s glazed mochi donut offerings include cookies & cream, matcha green tea, milk chocolate, tiramisu and pandan, described on their website as “a grassy vanilla with a hint of coconut on top.”

There are also sugar and churro mochi donuts available, with the latter being “a California classic!” with “a generous coating of cinnamon and sugar.” Plus, there’s a monthly mochi flavor special (July’s: pineapple; August’s: cookie butter), as well as numerous poke bowls, soy lattes, and coffee drinks.

They’re hoping to have news about their San Francisco store’s grand opening by late August, the MoDo Hawaii team said.

In the meantime, those craving a MoDo Hawaii treat can head to their Santa Clara location at 2000 El Camino Real, Unit 11.
