​Man Charged With Murder In Fatal San Francisco Shooting

A 23-year-old was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a man in San Francisco's Tenderloin district.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 23-year-old was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a man in San Francisco's Tenderloin district.

Lewis Jefferson Butler was arraigned Thursday and pleaded not guilty, prosecutors said.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Mason Street and Turk Street about 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Police found the victim laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Numerous witnesses were in the area of the killing and provided a description of the shooter, prosecutors said. When officers located Butler, he ran. He was eventually arrested near Market and 6th Street. Police found a firearm in the path of the foot pursuit.

In addition to murder, Butler is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and battery on a peace officer, prosecutors said.
