Mission District Shooting Victim Dies of Injuries

San Francisco resident Fidel Amezcua, 29, was shot by a male suspect in his late 20s on June 26.

A man who was shot in San Francisco's Mission District in June has died of his injuries, officials said today. San Francisco resident Fidel Amezcua, 29, died Saturday, according to the San Francisco medical examiner's office. Amezcua was shot once in the abdomen by a male suspect in his late 20s on June 26 in the area of 24th and Shotwell streets around 12:15 a.m., police said at the time. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The suspect fled north on Shotwell Street. Police have not reported any arrests in the case as of this morning.

The area saw a number of shootings over the summer months, including another one on the same day that Amezcua was shot. The victim in that incident was shot around 9:30 p.m. as he sat in his parked car at 26th
Street and Treat Avenue, but suffered only a graze wound.

On June 14 around 4 a.m., 32-year-old Alameda resident Robert Lewis was shot and killed in the area of Shotwell and 20th streets. On July 1, 27-year-old Rigoberto Romero was shot and killed near
Shotwell and 24th streets at around 11:45 p.m. On July 12, a 67-year-old man was shot in the lower torso as he stood outside on Shotwell near 24th Street at 5:41 p.m., according to police.

The man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and was expected to survive his injuries. The shots in that incident were thought to be associated with a black sedan. Police have not announced arrests in any of the shootings.
