📰 News we're reading

1. A 'Christmas Miracle' Just Saved A Beloved Bay Area Drag Club From Closing: Report (patch.com) — San Franciscans are celebrating as SoMA’s iconic drag club Oasis is unexpectedly saved from permanent closure by a multi-million dollar donation from a devoted patron. The venue, long a safe space for the city’s LGBTQ+ community, will temporarily close on January 1 for renovations and nonprofit restructuring, with its owner calling the last-minute rescue a true Christmas miracle for queer artists and local culture.

2. ‘Nightmare of noise': S.F. residents say a PG&E fix to restore power is driving them crazy (sfchronicle.com) — Richmond District neighbors are enduring round-the-clock, jet-engine-level generator noise as PG&E uses temporary power units to keep electricity flowing after last weekend’s massive outage that darkened a third of San Francisco. Residents say they’ve had cars towed, sleep disrupted, and little information from PG&E about what repairs are underway or when the generators — and the noise — will finally stop.

3. Months-long probe leads to 6 arrests tied to ‘prolific' Safeway theft crew in SF, Oakland (localnewsmatters.org) — San Francisco police say a months-long investigation into a retail theft crew targeting Safeway stores in San Francisco and Oakland has led to six arrests and the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen goods. Several suspects now face dozens of burglary, theft, vandalism, and firearm-related charges, and the District Attorney’s Office is handling both the local and Oakland-related cases as investigators seek more tips.

4. No ICE Arrests At Bay Area Courthouses, Judge Rules (patch.com) — If you have business at a Bay Area courthouse, a new federal court order temporarily blocks ICE from making arrests outside courthouses within its San Francisco Area of Responsibility, which covers all of Northern California. The judge found recent ICE policy changes chilled noncitizens’ willingness to appear in court and likely violated federal administrative law, so arrests are paused while the lawsuit proceeds.

5. Who's behind those ‘SHIMBY' posters across San Francisco? (missionlocal.org) — San Francisco’s new upzoning plan takes effect Jan. 12, 2026, while activists behind “SHIMBY” posters push Mayor Lurie to direct Prop. I transfer-tax revenue into social housing. The story explains their grassroots campaign, the political tug-of-war over hundreds of millions in potential funding, and what it could mean for permanently affordable homes across the city.
