📰 News we're reading

1. Dog Missing After Owner Attacked In San Francisco: Police (patch.com) — San Francisco police are searching for a missing dog named Charlotte Rose after her 65-year-old owner was violently assaulted near Post and Leavenworth streets, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. Investigators from SFPD’s Strategic Investigation Unit are asking anyone who spots the microchipped dog to call their tip line as they work both the attack and the search. The victim remains hospitalized while authorities continue to investigate the suspect’s actions.

2. Woman Gives Birth In Bay Area Waymo (patch.com) — A woman headed to UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco gave birth inside a Waymo robotaxi, prompting the company to temporarily pull the vehicle from service for cleaning. The unusual arrival highlights how deeply driverless cars are woven into Bay Area life, even as San Francisco officials and residents continue to scrutinize robotaxis after traffic incidents and a pet’s death. Waymo says it’s proud to serve riders from their first seconds of life onward.

3. San Francisco fire stations let it snow with return of decoration contest (sfchronicle.com) — San Francisco fire stations are gearing up for a citywide holiday decoration contest, complete with lights, fake (and sometimes real) snow, and neighborhood block parties on Friday, Dec. 20. Stretching from the Outer Richmond to SFO, stations will compete for $4,000 in charity prize money, with winners announced Dec. 21 and displays glowing through the end of December.

4. Nonprofit There With Care hoping to raise more funds to help families of sick children (ktvu.com) — A San Francisco-based nonprofit, There With Care, is urgently seeking $250,000 to keep helping families of critically ill children at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital with essentials like food, gas, and rent. With inflation and cuts to other social services squeezing resources, the group fears scaling back support just as local families face their toughest holiday season.

5. Bellying up to the history of San Francisco's wildest bar (nbcbayarea.com) — San Francisco history buffs get a vivid tour of Abe Warner’s long-gone Cobweb Palace, the bizarre waterfront bar once packed with animals, artifacts, and legendary clam chowder on Meigg’s Wharf. Local historian Woody LaBounty of San Francisco Heritage connects its colorful 19th-century stories to today’s North Beach, pointing to Specs’ Twelve Adler as a spiritual successor keeping that eccentric barroom spirit alive.
