He Then Stabbed Him To Death: DA (patch.com) — San Franciscans are learning more about a 2023 Mission Street stabbing after a jury found 41-year-old Dennis Duree guilty of first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say Duree attacked two acquaintances on a sidewalk encampment along the 1300 block of Mission Street, killing Brandon Mitchell, and he now faces sentencing in San Francisco Superior Court on January 29, 2026.

CA Community Ranked Best Place To Live For Older Adults (patch.com) — San Francisco has been ranked the nation’s best very large community for older adults for the sixth straight year, despite its notoriously high housing costs. AARP’s index highlights the city’s strong health, transportation, and walkability metrics, while also noting nearby Bay Area standouts like Marin County and Fairfax for seniors considering different community sizes.
   

3. A New Study Challenges the Way We Screen for Breast Cancer (time.com) — San Francisco’s UCSF Breast Care Center is at the center of a major new study suggesting that personalized breast cancer screening schedules can be as safe and effective as annual mammograms. Led by Dr. Laura Esserman, the WISDOM trial used genetic testing and other risk factors to tailor screening frequency, potentially reducing overtreatment while still catching dangerous cancers early.
   

4. Lawsuit is First To Blame ChatGPT For Homicide, Alleging It Fostered Killer's Delusions (patch.com) — A wrongful-death lawsuit has been filed in San Francisco Superior Court accusing OpenAI and Microsoft of failing to prevent alleged harmful interactions between ChatGPT and a Connecticut man before he killed his mother and himself. The suit seeks damages and new safety safeguards for the chatbot, and is among several cases nationwide testing how far AI companies’ legal responsibility extends.
   

5. Governor Newsom announces appointments 12.12.2025 (ca.gov) — A San Francisco resident, Elmy Bermejo, has been appointed Director of California’s Office of Small Business Advocate and serves on the San Francisco Commission on the Environment, giving the city added influence in state policy. Governor Newsom also named several other Californians to key statewide boards overseeing community colleges, corrections, labor relations, and energy regulation.
