📰 News we're reading

1. Man Who Sexually Assaulted Multiple Relatives Sentenced: SFDA (patch.com) — San Francisco readers are learning that 60-year-old Sergio Alvarado has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting two relatives in separate incidents, one in 2014 and another in 2019. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office detailed multiple rape and assault convictions, while DA Brooke Jenkins emphasized her office’s focus on removing sexual predators from local communities to protect children.

2. Name of 1-year-old boy run over in S.F. driveway released (sfchronicle.com) — A 1-year-old boy, Muhammad Alghazali, died after being accidentally run over in a driveway at Hayes and Webster streets in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood on December 14. Police say the driver, known to the child, cooperated with investigators and there is no evidence of a crime. Authorities publicly released the child’s name this week and expressed condolences to his family.

3. UCSF tells workers at Ward 86, site of fatal stabbing, to stop talking (missionlocal.org) — UCSF has ordered Ward 86 staff at San Francisco General Hospital not to discuss this month’s fatal stabbing without university lawyers present, citing potential litigation. Traumatized workers say safety concerns were long ignored even as new security measures, like weapons screening and added patrols, are now being rolled out. Many Ward 86 staff remain out, with fill‑ins keeping the HIV clinic running.

4. S.F. federal judge orders a stop to ICE courthouse arrests (sfchronicle.com) — A San Francisco-based federal judge has temporarily barred ICE from arresting migrants at immigration courthouses within the agency’s San Francisco jurisdiction, including courts in San Francisco, Sacramento and Concord. The judge ruled that courthouse arrests deter people from attending vital hearings and lack a solid policy justification. The decision could later be expanded or appealed, potentially affecting how immigration cases proceed locally.

5. Absent 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk apologizes for viral speeding video (sfchronicle.com) — San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has apologized after a viral video showed him speeding near Levi’s Stadium, saying he doesn’t want to endanger others or their families. The absent star, already on the reserve/left squad list and out for the season, briefly opened up about praying with his young son while coach Kyle Shanahan declined to discuss his personal situation in detail.
