Uber Charged $18,000 For An 11-Mile Ride: Report

A user in Toronto was charged $18,000, but the ride-sharing app refunded him after the error.

The ride-sharing app Uber charged a user $18,000 to go a total of 11 miles, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. The several-thousand dollar ride happened in Toronto, according to the report. Uber told the Post it had refunded the money to the user, who posted a photo of his bill on Instagram.

“There was an error and we have provided a full refund. We sincerely apologize to this rider for his experience,” an Uber spokeswoman told the Post in an email. “We have safeguards in place to help prevent something like this from happening and we are working to understand how this occurred.”

$18,000 converts to about $14,000 in U.S. dollars, and that number may have been incorrectly put into a taxi meter that Uber shares, an Uber official told the Post.
