Why People In SF Are Eager To Rent These 100-Sqaure-Foot 'Tech Dorms'

For $1,000 a month, some are trading expensive apartments to live in crammed collaborative spaces with like-minded tech obsessives.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — There's a good reason why tech workers in the Bay Area are moving away from renting costly rooms or apartments and opting instead for dormitory life — and it has less to do with money than you'd think.

For $1,000 a month, tech workers have been eager to live in a co-living space that may be around 100-square-foot with a sink, mini-fridge as well as a shared kitchen and bathroom, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

For Param Vora, he and his friends don't see the point of paying double that amount for a room in an apartment when they can live among like-minded tech and AI obsessives.

“If you are a single person like me you are focused mainly on building your company,” Vora told the Chronicle. “There are so many founders living in these buildings — we all share this mindset of building AI technology to solve large-scale problems.”

These buildings were largely abandoned during the pandemic. But now, they're making a comeback for young entrepreneurs drawn to the AI boom.
