The Marin Municipal Water District will be closing Sky Oaks Road, the main route to the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed, for slide repair work weekdays this fall. The repair project will take approximately six weeks, from mid-October to late November, and the road will be completely closed on some weekdays during that period. The road will be open on weekends.
This work is needed to repair damage that occurred to Sky Oaks Road last March when a significant slide undercut the paved road. Sky Oaks Road is approximately two miles west of downtown Fairfax at the main watershed entrance.
The construction schedule, which includes the project start date and the dates for the road closure, is still under development. A weekly update regarding specific dates and times for the closures will be posted on MMWD’s website, www.marinwater.org, every Friday and will also be sent to followers of MMWD’s Twitter feed: @thinkbluemarin. More frequent updates will be provided when possible.
The closure of Sky Oaks Road is necessary to accommodate the large heavy equipment that will be used for hillside drilling. Watershed visitors can expect delays throughout the construction period with traffic control in place at times. Weather conditions may also affect the work schedule. Watershed visitors should note that the timing of this project and related closures overlaps with periodic closures on Concrete Pipe Road and Shaver Grade, also for slide repair work, from mid-October to January and plan accordingly.
The slide repair work must be completed before heavy rains fall this winter, potentially causing more damage. Since March, when the slide occurred, MMWD has had to block off the outside edge of the road with temporary barricades and traffic has been limited to one way only to maintain traffic safety. This project will restore the road to its pre-slide condition and substantially improve the structural integrity of the road and hillside to prevent a slide from occurring at this location again.
The MMWD Board of Directors awarded the contract for this project to Hillside Drilling, Inc., of Richmond, who submitted the lowest responsible bid of $128,369.00.
