New San Anselmo Homes Required To Be Electric

In response to an online survey​, 93 percent of respondents expressed support for requiring new residential buildings to go all-electric.

SAN ANSELMO, CA — The town of San Anselmo will require all new homes to go electric.

The resolution banning gas hookups in future development was approved by the Town Council earlier this month.

And all indications are the resolution enjoys overwhelming support from town residents.

In response to an online survey, 93 percent of respondents expressed support for requiring new residential buildings to go all-electric.

The move aligns with the city’s state’s goals of reaching a 40 percent reduction of greenhouse gases from 1990 levels by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

The electrification ordinance follows a growing trend that started in Berkeley in 2019.

Transitioning from natural gas to electric power is among the most effective ways municipalities can reduce emissions, CNN reports.

"Natural gas bans are kind of low-hanging fruit," Sheila Foster, an environmental law expert told the news outlet.
