The San Anselmo-Fairfax area is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that the San Anselmo-Fairfax area has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Did you know that Fairfax has an independent bike shop that has been serving the community for over 50 years? Since 1971, Sunshine Bicycles has been providing residents and visitors with quality bikes and accessories, as well as repair services.
- The San Anselmo Library is a hidden gem that was established in 1915 and boasts a wide range of books and materials. Additionally, the library has a rain garden to help educate the community about rainwater harvesting.
- San Anselmo is home to Imagination Park, which George Lucas donated in 2013 to commemorate the birthplace of two of his most iconic films. The downtown park features life-sized statues of Indiana Jones (created in town in 1974) and Yoda from Star Wars (created in 1973).
- The Farifax Community Farmers’ Market occurs in town every Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. while in season. Fresh local produce and more can be found at the market at Bolinas Park.
- The San Anselmo Historical Museum is a small but fascinating museum that explores the history of the town and the surrounding area, including the Coast Miwok Indians, early settlers and local businesses.
- The origins of the name San Anselmo can be traced back to the Punta de Quintin land grant, which designated this region as the Canada del Anselmo or the Valley of Anselm. During the first few decades of the 1900s, San Anselmo became a hub for silent film productions.
- Both San Anselmo and Fairfax are situated in the heart of Marin County, which offers plenty of outdoor activities, from hiking and biking to kayaking and beachcombing. Don't miss the stunning views from Mount Tamalpais State Park or the picturesque Point Reyes National Seashore.
- Lord Charles Snowden Fairfax lent his name to the town that now bears it. This quaint locale was the site of California's final political duel in 1861, in which former state assemblymen Daniel Showalter and Charles W. Piercy sought to resolve their disagreements. The two men, who were acquaintances of Lord Fairfax, chose to hold their duel at his residence.
- The Marin Museum of Bicycling, located in Fairfax, is a must-visit for any cycling enthusiast. The museum home to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and features bike exhibits on early models, vintage bikes and modern racing gear.
- The Playhouse in San Anselmo is a charming community theater that hosts a variety of plays and musicals throughout the year. With affordable ticket prices and a talented cast of local actors, it's a great spot for a night out.
- If you're in the mood for a sweet treat, head to Flour Craft Bakery & Café in San Anselmo, which offers a wide variety of gluten-free baked goods.
- Both San Anselmo and Fairfax are known for their vibrant arts scenes, with numerous galleries and studios featuring the work of local artists. Check out the San Anselmo Arts Commission or Public Art in the Parkade in Fairfax.
