Could the Next Van Gogh Come From Crestmoor Elementary?

The recent artwork from a Crestmoor Elementary kindergarten class are one of the featured projects on display at the district office.

Every month, students get the opportunity to channel the talent of great artists such as Vincent van Gogh andΒ Wassily Kandinsky through a program called Art in Action.

The program teaches the students different styles of art, and parents get to come in the classroom and share what they know about the famous artwork.

Karen Byrne and Nancy Volkman's kindergarten class was one of the groups to recently participate in the Art in Action program, and the class's artwork is on display this month at the office.

Volkman said the projects reflect the work of Vincent van Gogh's flowers,Β Kandinsky's lines,Β Native American Zuni Kachina dolls andΒ Okajuma Toyohiro's Japanese caligraphy.

Taking on these unique styles of art allowed the students to go beyond one-dimensional learning, Volkman said.

"This way, it allows the children to have a lot of difference experiences," Volkman said. "It doesn't always have to be with your pencil."

San Bruno Patch has been featuring art projects from schools throughout the city that areΒ on display at the districtΒ office. On Tuesday, we'll feature artwork from Parkside Intermediate.
