Lions Club Splurges, Raises $6K

The margarita night featured an eight-course meal, a fully stocked bar and $5,000 in door prizes.

The San Bruno Lions Club raised more than $6,000 for charity Saturday during its fourth annual margarita night.

About 220 people packed the senior center to indulge in an eight-course meal prepared by owner Isaac Mejia. The event featured a fully stocked bar and, of course, plenty of margaritas.

The Lions Club also raffled off plenty of door prizes, including a Callaway golf bag, two travel bags, golf clothing, an iPad, dozens of boxes of See’s candies, and Balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Mejia said he waited until just before the event to decide on the menu as a challenge to himself and to impress the guests. But he and his staff breezed through the dinner service. They were helped by a group of Leo’s Club members from and .

“It’s because I have an extremely well-trained staff and because I want to see if I can get called up to Iron Chef,” said Mejia, who is also a member of the Lions Club.

The meal featured:

  • Hand-scooped guacamole
  • Pork cracklings with salsa
  • Chorizo beans
  • Mexican Caesar salad
  • Tex-Mex roasted black bean and corn salad
  • Arroz con pollo
  • Homemade chile relleno
  • Shortrib chile Colorado
  • Mango cheesecake

(Full disclosure: I attended the event.)

Although the food, live music and bar kept people entertained throughout the event, the highlight of the night came when San Bruno Lions Club President Smitty Smith got up on the tables and danced the night away.

The next Lions Club event will be its Oktoberfest on Oct. 24, which will feature authentic German cooking and music.
