More than 20 officers from law enforcement agencies throughout SanΒ Mateo County will join forcesΒ on WednesdayΒ to increase traffic safetyΒ awareness, with a focus on protecting pedestrians.
Four recent pedestrian deaths have brought to light the need forΒ more safety measures, Burlingame police Sgt. Jay Kiely said.
Employing the county's S.T.E.P., or San Mateo County SaturationΒ Traffic Enforcement Program, the collaborative law enforcement team willΒ saturate central San Mateo County -- specifically the cities of San Mateo,Β Foster City and Burlingame.
The San Mateo Police Department has also begun conductingΒ pedestrian safety seminars throughout the city, specifically tailored toΒ senior citizens and offering ways to avoid being injured, according to Kiely.
A previous S.T.E.P. enforcement in May in the cities of Pacifica,Β San Bruno and South San Francisco consisted of 21 officers from variousΒ county agencies. The deployment resulted in more than 200 citations forΒ unsafe driving.
