Christine Boland Named New Parks Director
San Carlos City Manager Jeff Maltbie says Boland will bring strong leadership and innovative vision to the Parks and Recreation Department.

[Editor's note: The following was submitted by the City of San Carlos.]
San Carlos City Manager Jeff Maltbie announced the appointment of Christine Boland to become the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of San Carlos effective July 3, 2013. In this position, she will be responsible for managing the City's Parks, directing Recreation Programs as well as staffing the City's Parks and Recreation Commission.
Christine has been serving as the Acting Parks & Recreation Director since February, 2013 when Doug Long, the City's Former Parks & Recreation Director retired from San Carlos after serving as director for 5 years. Her starting annual salary as Parks and Recreation Director will be $141,684.
Christine started with the City of San Carlos as Assistant City Clerk in June 1998 and was then elected as City Clerk in the following election. During her tenure as City Clerk, she was responsible for several improvements to that department including the development of an Automated Document Management System for all City records, a Document Retention Program and ePackets.Net - a program linking Agendas, Minutes and Council Reports to Meeting Videos. In 2009, voters in San Carlos passed Measure V, which converted the City Clerk position from an elected office to an appointed office to insure that the position was filled with an individual who possessed the skill and qualifications needed by the City.
In 2011, Christine added the duties of Director of Community Relations to her position. In that role, she developed the popular Community Newsletter, Good Living, that is mailed out to all San Carlos residents and businesses quarterly. She also started a series of videos that provide information on City Services and Programs that are shown on the San Carlos City Cable TV Channel (Comcast Channel 27 and AT&T Uverse Channel 99).
Prior to her work at the City of San Carlos, Christine served as the Clerk of the Board for Samtrans for 11 years and as a member of the Administrative Staff at the San Mateo County Harbor District for nearly 4 years. Christine is a native of California, having grown up and attended high school in Half Moon Bay. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from the College of Notre Dame, Belmont, in 1995 and a Masters of Public Administration degree from California State University at Hayward in 2005.
Christine is a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) in California. Her professional affiliations include the League of California Cities City Clerk's Department and the Municipal Management Association of California (MMANC).
City Manager Jeff Maltbie said that the appointment of Christine Boland as the new Parks and Recreation Director came after a statewide search performed by an Executive Search firm that drew over 150 applicants for the job. Maltbie said "Christine Boland has been a key part of the City's Executive Management Team since she joined the City in 1998. When the previous Parks and Recreation Director retired, I appointed her to the position of Acting Parks and Recreation Director to bring strong leadership and innovative vision to that department. She has excelled in her work as the Acting Director and that work and expertise shined through during the competitive process for the permanent position."
Maltbie added "I congratulate Christine on earning the appointment as Parks and Recreation Director and look forward to working with her in that capacity. I know that she will continue to be a major contributor to the City and to our Parks and Recreation department and programs in the months and years ahead."
